Sleep Apnea Seen in Pregnant Women With Gestational Diabetes
Every team comes to win, however one team has already won in the hearts of many around the world. “They are definitely an inspiration to everyone with diabetes in the world.” For the first time since Phil Southerland founded a cycling team to promote diabetes awareness, every member has something in common. “We’re all Type 1 diabetics and professional cyclists as well,” says Joonas Henttala. “We compete against the best cyclists in the world.” It’s not always easy but compete they do and the Novo Nordisk Team keeps track of every detail. “It’s even more crucial for us diabetics to keep everything in balance and we always need to think one step ahead, just like we need to think about what kind of training are we going to do,” says Henttala. Adds Fabio Calabria, “The things you do to be a successful cyclist are the same things you do to be a successful person with diabetes.” They’re here to race and also spread a message to anyone with diabetes. “Everyone with diabetes out there is a part of Team Novo Nordisk,” says Southerland.

Depression With Diabetes Speeds Mental Decline: Study
“Nearly 75 percent of the participants in our study who had gestational diabetes also suffered from obstructive sleep apnea,” Reutrakul said. While the study found an increased risk of having sleep apnea among pregnant women with gestational diabetes, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship. Previous research has shown that less sleep, fragmented sleep and shorter periods spent in deep sleep, which are all symptoms of sleep apnea, can increase a person’s risk of developing diabetes. “Based on these findings, women who have gestational diabetes should be considered for evaluation for obstructive sleep apnea, especially if other risk factors such as hypertension or obesity are present, and women already diagnosed with sleep apnea should be monitored for signs of gestational diabetes during pregnancy,” Reutrakul said. Both diabetes and depression have been found to raise the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia later in life. But whether depression is a cause or an effect of cognitive decline remains unclear. Diabetes can damage organs, especially the kidneys, eyes, nervous system and brain. The disease also raises a person’s risk for having a cardiovascular “event” such as a heart attack or stroke.

Giving diabetes the boot
Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.7 billion to T1D research. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research, research-related education and advocacy. Past JDRF research efforts have helped to significantly improve the care of people with this disease, and have expanded the critical scientific understanding of T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. For more information, please visit jdrf.ca .
